Baseball,Technorati and Library Thing

I can hardly wait for opening day! Last year was the first year without my beloved Boonie on the team so I didn't start the year with a belief that the Mariners were going to do much that season. I eventually made Richie Sexson my new 'main man' and can hardly wait for this season to begin! Luckily, FSN has started broadcasting some of the Cactus League games. It's still a dream of mine to be a snowbird one day and spend at least a week in Phoenix to catch some spring training games. :-)

I haven't formed a real opinion yet about Technorati. On the surface, I think it could be useful if one thinks blogposts are useful sources of information in general. I need to experiment more with it by doing some searches that could be relevant for me to see if I'd ever really use the site.

I signed up on LibraryThing and added 5 of my favorite books to 'my library' http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=bassetbudi

I found the blog post that compares tagging on LibraryThing vs. Amazon pretty interesting, though: http://www.librarything.com/thingology/2007/02/when-tags-works-and-when-they-dont.php I've never understood some folks loathing of Amazon since I've always found exactly what I needed there and plenty of other options with very simple searches. As the blogposting above points out, Amazon is a business and wants to sell thing; while they offer customers an opportunity to provide tags for products few customers have opted to do so. On the other hand, LibraryThing has tons of tagged entries making it much more useful for potentially coming up with more items on a tagged search. It must be noted that customers on Amazon don't really have any incentive to add tags because it is perceived as not directly benefitting them...but another customer...so why do "work" for Amazon for free?

GO MARINERS!!!

Could this photo be any more perfect? I adore sunflowers and the contrast of the sunny yellow in this picture with the lapis blue sky is exquisite. It is a dream of mine to someday see acres upon acres of sunflowers all in bloom.

MySpace, Facebook and Spring

Daffodils - III

I still find MySpace a confusing display of provocative advertising and admit I'm still fearful of putting myself "out there". I see 21 people have viewed my profile there (I haven't added any profile information, photos, nada.)

Facebook is much more user-friendly for me. It's visually easier to navigate and has a more "grown-up" feel.

We have daffodils popping up all over town. This photo from Flickr was taken in Victoria, B.C. but provides a lovely representation of what is happening where I live.

MySpace...should libraries care?

Hello again, gentle readers--
I actually created a MySpace account a few months ago. My daughter was missing (again) and I was trying all avenues to find her. One of her friends sent me a link to her MySpace page. I sent her an email through there. She had posted to her page that very day so I knew she had some internet access. I never heard back from her via MySpace but she did eventually show up in person.

What I found on her page was very disturbing. Interestingly, after I told her I had a MySpace account and read her pages all the *disturbing* stuff magically disappeared! (Guess she cares what I think after all :-) And the *friends* and photos she had either on her page or links to her friend's pages and photos were a maze of darkness...as I interpreted them.

So, I have MySpace account but I haven't made it my own by adding any information about me. I've only received a few emails...all spam and advertisements.
I am looking forward to my exploration of the site via 27 Things but I really see use of MySpace as primarily a "teen thing." I think the kids view it that way, too. That's why when I read the links on 27 Things #9, I couldn't help but have the same gut reaction as one librarian wrote:

<<

To my mind, many kids using Myspace or similar sites would see libarians as authority figures, same as teachers or parents. They might very well not want us there. Isn't part of being a teenager developing your own space, with your peers, away from adults?>>>

I clicked the link to the Denver Public Library MySpace page and was pleasantly surprised with some good music (Switchfoot) and what looked at first glance to be a single user's page. It looked very inviting for a teen audience. Maybe it does help to have a presence in their "electronic world."

It seems to me that it's not a bad thing for KCLS to try it and see if/how it works. I wonder, though, about issues like the following:

1) Do the youth really want us in their 'space'?
2) What happens if someone writes/posts innappropriate or personal remarks/information on the library's page?
3) While touring around MySpace, it was a vision more of chaos to me and not a place of sure information nor sure identity. Good reason abounds to retaining some caution about it.
4) With MySpace's popularity has come some other sites, most notably "Facebook". What I see as chaotic on MySpace seems more streamlined at Facebook.
5) I really don't like all the ads on MySpace...especially all the flashing ads.

over and out,

kathleen

Basset mama-n-pups

Puppies in general are hard to resist but basset pups? Oh myyyyyyy...they're usually tripping over their ears and big feet. :-)

This is one of my favorite paintings. I love how Vermeer was able to 'create' light. Yes, I did read the book and saw the movie "Girl with a Pearl Earring"...both good.

I found the photo through a kcls database, downloaded it to my PC then uploaded it to my blog.

How to add a blogroll to your blog

Here's what (I think) I did to set up my blogroll here. "Blogroll" means all the feeds I'm subscribed to. You can also pick and choose which ones you want to display...I chose the whole kit-n-caboodle.

1. Open www.bloglines.com
2. Click "share your blogroll"
3. Your user name will show; leave the other fields blank and click "generate html"
4. Copy the URL (not the java script)
5. Open www.blogspot.com; click "layout" tab; click "add a page element"; click "link list"
6. Paste the URL, create a title for your blogroll, etc.

Voila!

Green eyes

Can I go now?
Originally uploaded by fieldsbh.
I found a great photographer on Flickr. I love this close-up and the beautiful eyes on this obviously cuddly kitty. My eyes are green but not the sea-blue-green of this cat.

RSS feeds now available!

YAY! I experimented with adding my "blogroll" to my blog last week but couldn't get it to fully work. *Something* posted to my blog but basically it was an error message. Now, you can see all the RSS feeds I'm signed up for. Why, oh why, didn't I learn about RSS before this program?!?!? Very cool...

Thank you to everyone who's left comments on my blog! :-)

RSS feeds

I changed the name of my blog address today. http://kathleenolsen.blogspot.com was just too boring ;-) so I changed it to http://bassetbudi.blogspot.com

I am really enjoying 27 things! Today, I ventured into the new world of RSS feeds. Blogline was very easy to set up and I'm looking forward to exploring all the different settings there. I love the idea of having one place to view all the relevant news...or the daily cartoon...or latest blogpost without having to sift through all the advertising. I figure those folks out there who see us primarily as 'consumers' will find some way to infiltrate this system but for now, it's a real blessing.

I understand Millenium has a "My Millenium" feature that is supposed to allow for RSS feeds. I'll be checking that out more fully when I attend the IUG conference in May.

I haven't figured out how to add RSS links to my blog yet. I'm still experimenting with blogspot settings and layout...which reminds me, I still need to bring in a photo disc from home so I can practice posting a picture here.

Maybe it's time for me to head back into the world of Flickr and find some photos of basset hounds for fun? Bassets always make me smile so I hope they will provide the same cheer for you. :-)

Mashups

Mashups appear to be mostly clever toys one can have fun with. I liked the Montagr best. It creates a mosaic from photos found on Flickr based on a tag I clicked. It uses a system of color 'values' to create a new picture from many pictures. I can see where the Trading Card Maker would be fun for my 10 year old son.

Loch in Scotland on way to Fort William

Can't you just see Jamie and Claire Fraser traversing this area??? (Hopefully, some of you will know who I'm referring to.)

Hmmmmmm maybe a wee bit too much partying last night?

I'm getting there...

After playing more at Flickr.com, I figured out how to add a photo to this blog and how to blog about it! My first meanderings around the site made me wary of the service because of copyright issues e.g. "I like this photo and want to post it to my website...is that ok? Do I have to get permission from each photographer to do that? If the photo can be blogged about, is that the only 'permission-free' way to 'post' a photo outside of Flickr?

I'm going to add a few more photos so tell me what you think of them, too :-)

Flickr.com

Flickr has me a bit baffled so far. While it's an interesting way to share photos or receive comments on one's photographic work, I'm not really sure I'd use it much. I understand how the tagging works and how Flickr makes it easy to find photos one is interested in viewing. I guess I was expecting it to be a site where I could find a photo that I could copy into my blog or other web source. Flickr says we can write to the photographer who posted the photos for permission to use a photo. I see there is also a way to pay for using a photo. It seems a lot easier to use a database of public domain photos. We'll see how I do after I play a bit more on the Flikr site.

Navigation

I've had some trouble navigating around the blogspot but generally found it pretty easy to use. My next venture will be to update my profile with more information and a photo.
